It’s Carnival Time!
That’s right, ladies and gents, get ready for the revelry!
For those who’ve never experienced the Carnival traditions in our city, the twelfth night after Christmas (known as “12th Night”) is the official beginning of the Carnival season…which continues for several weeks until commencing with our most cherished holiday, Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday).
On this night, our first parade rolls through the french quarter in celebration of the Patron Saint of Orleans, Joan of Arc. It is also the day that the city of New Orleans proclaims “Let them eat KING CAKE”. Although, it is a highly sought after desert throughout the year, I wish to remind y’all of some very important things:
~ “The knife stays IN the box”, so that everyone can enjoy a slice without having to search for cutlery.
~ “Don’t bite the baby” and if you get it, you’re expected to bring a king cake for the next parade party.
~ “January 6th is about Confection, not Insurrection”. (please, leave the soapbox megaphones at home.)
This being said, while most of our parade floats are designed with satirical themes of local culture and political parody, don’t be fooled by our jesting. In Louisiana, we love to “cut up and cut loose”. We love to laugh. We love decadent foods and beverages. We love dancing in the streets to lively Jazz music, played by big brass bands. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got two left feet, as long as you don’t step on anybody’s toes. Everyone is invited to the dance!
…and if there’s one thing “LaLa” loves as much as playing music, it’s dancing! Tonight i’ve got a date with the dance floor at a certain soiree’, but then i’ll be crafting up a new costume and glittering my slippers. If you happen to catch the parade, on “Muses tHERsday”…give a yell for Skellebelle, i’ll be sweeping the streets to the beat with Skinz-N-Bonez.
Though we must bid “farewell to the flesh”, also “Enjoy Yourself (it’s later than you think)”.
Of course, i’m certain much music and merriment will be underway for me over the next few weeks, so keep an ear out on my events page (or on social platforms) to see where i’ll be turning up to play my favorite “Fat Tuesday” tunes for y’all!
Stay tuned, LaLa love ya’ll…and “Lassiez le Bon Temps Rouler!”
